State Representative, 91st District
Mike Unes is serving his third term as State Representative of the 91st District. Mike was first elected in 2010, beating out a 16-year incumbent as a Republican serving in a majority Democrat district. Prior to his service in the Illinois House, Mike served as an East Peoria City Commissioner for three years, where he served as the Accounts and Finance Commissioner as well as Mayor Pro-Tem for the Council.
Rep. Unes currently serves on the following committees in the Illinois House: Human Services- Appropriations; Cities & Villages; Economic Development; Insurance; International Trade & Commerce; Transportation: Vehicles & Safety; Small Business Empowerment & Workforce Development; and Elementary and Secondary Education.
Mike has been a very active leader in Central Illinois for many years. He has served as President of the East Peoria Rotary, Board member for the Young Professionals of Greater Peoria, Steering Committee Member of the Tazewell County Resource Center, Vice Chairman of the East Peoria Mass Transit District Board, Treasurer of the Itoo Society, and Ambassador for the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce.
In addition, Unes started a literacy campaign, together with the Rotary Club, for the Tazewell-Woodford County Head Start program. This campaign provided an educational interaction between low-income children and business leaders of East Peoria.
Unes’ service to the community has not gone without recognition. He was recently named 2013 Consumer Protection Legislator of the Year by the Illinois Insurance Association for his work on landmark copper theft legislation. He was named 2012 Public Official of the Year by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and 2012 Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce. He was named Outstanding Freshman Legislator by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce in 2012, as well as 2012 Legislator of the Year by the Illinois Association of Electric Cooperatives. Unes was also selected as one of the “40 Leaders Under Forty” by Peoria’s Inter Business Issues in 2007.
In his professional life, Unes has worn many different hats in the ten years he worked for Heinold-Banwart, the largest privately-held accounting firm in Central Illinois. As the firm’s Director of Recruitment and Network Administrator, Unes was responsible for every facet of the firm’s hiring process. In addition to these duties, Unes handled the firm’s scheduling and marketing, and managed its Information Technology needs. Prior to working at Heinold-Banwart, Mike served in a Management position for Kroger, Inc.
Unes is a life-long resident of Central Illinois, as well as a 1996 graduate of Bradley University. Although Mike enjoys serving his community and keeping active with community service activities, he is most proud of his family. Mike and his wife Natalie were married in 1998 and have four children – Meghan, Nathan, Michelle, and Nicholas. In his free time, Mike enjoys playing and coaching sports, following baseball, reading and spending quality time with his family.
